Nakhon Si Thammarat lies in southern Thailand, in the Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The city is divided in to the Old City and new City. The Old City has the Wat Phra Mahathat Vihan and the old city wall that is the remains of an old fort. The New City is built around the railway station. Nakhon Si Thammarat is surrounded by tropical forests to the west and faces the Gulf of Thailand in the east. Once on the shores of the gulf, Nakhon Si Thammarat now lies on a high plateau that gradually descends to the Gulf.
The sleepy town was once an administrative capital of the Srivijayas. For those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, this place is an ideal getaway.
The Wat Phra Mahathat Vihan is a Buddhist shrine containing a relic of the Lord Buddha. It is a major center for Buddhist pilgrimage in southern Thailand. The temple architecture has been influenced by the Buddhist architecture of many Asian countries. So you can see a tall Sri Lankan style "chedi", or spire, amongst the older chedis in the Srivijaya style. The temple has galleries with stone carvings of the Buddha, and the staircases are embellished with ornate images of Yaksha, the demon guardians of the Temple.
The City Wall is the only remnant of an old fort dating back to 1278. The wall encloses an area of almost 1 square kilometer, and has an elaborate gate, which is one of the five still remaining.
