The Garhwal and Kumaon regions present the best opportunity for those interested in mountaineering. These include the Tons-Banderpunch region, the Gangotri glaciers, Arwa glaciers, Kamet and Abi Gamin. The places where you must reach for these mountaineering regions include Taluka, Gangotri, Joshimath, and Malari. From the city of Delhi you can reach these places in about 2 or 3 days. The Kalabaland glaciers, the Panch Chulhi, Rajrambha and Chaudhara are the peaks located in the region of Kumaon. All the peaks mentioned are not as challenging as the other famous peaks of the Himalayas. But they also pose some unique challenges for the climbers.

The mountaineering lovers would have to get themselves a permit before they can indulge in this adventure sport. They would also have to pay the peak booking fee. The other things for which they have to seek permission include line restrictions, equipment import, camera, insurance, medical attention and evacuation procedures. The high mountaineering season in India starts from the month of April and lasts till the end of November. Many of the tourists try out the activity during the winter months in India too.

The Indian Mountaineering Foundation is the national apex body in the country which regulates activities related to mountaineering in India. The body is based in the capital city of India, Delhi. For mountaineering trips in India all tourists, whether domestic or international, have to apply to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation regarding permission for the planned activity. They have to make an application 6 months prior to the date planned to carry out the brave task. The foreign tourists would be required to have an Indian liaison officer accompanying them throughout the trip. They would also have to bear the costs involved in hiring the liaison officer.
