The Capitals Of Scandinavia

The Capitals Of Scandinavia DAY 1: STOCKHOLM
Arrival in Stockholm after your own itinerary or with the cruise from Helsinki. Stockholm is built on 14 islands and is called "Venice of the North". The city rises gracefully up from the water. The water is so clean that you can go swimming or fishing in the heart of the city.

We recommend a boat trip on the canals to the Drottningholm castle. The castle was built in 1662 and is the residence to the Royal family of Sweden. It is situated outside Stockholm with a wonderful view of the water, and has very nice gardens (service not included).

For a combination of nature, culture and relaxation we recommend a boat ride from Stockholm to the island Birka. Twelve hundred years ago Birka was established as a trading port. It also became the first real town in Sweden. Birka was founded in the last part of the 8th century, but people inhabited the island before the town was established. There was a well traveled water way here where they could go to places like Vendel and Uppsala. Since the island was located in a protective bay it was easily defended from invaders (service not included).

DAY 2: STOCKHOLM
Breakfast at the hotel.

Depart on a 2 1/2 hours guided tour of Stockholm with a local English speaking guide (service included). The tour is called Stockholm in a Nutshell and is a combination tour which shows you the whole of Stockholm. You will start with a coach trip around the city, viewing the best known sites and buildings. After one hour and a half, you will transfer to a boat to sail around the royal park of Djurgården and past the most inner archipelago islands (service included). At 12:15 hrs we recommend to see the guard changing ceremony which takes place in front of the Royal palace.

We also recommend a visit to Drottningholm Palace, which has been the home of the Royal Family since 1981. It was built in 1662 and is situated outside Stockholm, with a wonderful view of the water, and we recommend that you take a walk through the beautiful gardens (entrance not included). We also recommend a visit to the old town (Gamla Stan) with its narrow cobbled streets and old merchant's houses.

DAY 3: STOCKHOLM - OSLO (train)
Breakfast at the hotel.

Board the train to Oslo. Arrival in Oslo according to your own itinerary. Oslo is the largest city in Norway and is closer to nature than many other capitals can provide. The day is at your disposal for personal discovery and shopping in the capital of Norway. We recommend a tour on your own including a visit to the famous and amazing Vigeland sculpture park, the royal castle, the city hall, the parliament building (Stortinget) and a trip to Bygdøy to see some of the famous museums, such as the Fram, Kon-Tiki and the Viking Ship museums (entrances not included).

We recommend a walk down Karl Johan, Oslo's main street, for shopping, a stroll along the Aker Brygge with its numerous shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, the Akershus Fortress, and/or some of the excellent museums in town, like the national art gallery (free entrance), or the Munch museum (entrances not included).

DAY 4: OSLO
Breakfast at the hotel.

At 10.15 you can join one of the tour buses for a 3 or hours city sightseeing of the city (service included). The tour includes a visit to the famous Vigelands Sculpture Park, the Holmenkollen Skijump and the Viking Ship Museum. Other sights of interest are the Royal Castle, the City Hall, the Parliament Building (Stortinget) and a trip to Bygdøy to see some of the famous museums, such as the Fram Exploration Museum where you will see the 39 meter rigged schooner used by Fridtjof Nansen, the Kon- Tiki Museum dedicated to the balsa raft which Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl sailed from Peru to Polynesia, and the Viking Ship Museum which houses three Viking ships excavated from the Oslo fjord.

DAY 5: OSLO - COPENHAGEN (ferry)
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at your own disposal for shopping or sightseeing. If you want to go shopping, we recommend a trip to Bogstadveien, the largest shopping street in Norway. Bogstadveien is north of the royal castle. If the weather is good you can depart on a Fjord sightseeing (service not included). On this cruise, the boat passes through narrow, idyllic bays and see a maze of islands, dotted with small summer houses. Oslo can also offer many popular beaches just outside the city centre. Huk is a beach on Bygdøy, and is worth a visit if you prefer bathing and sunbathing. Transfer on your own to the DFDS Seaways terminal for your overnight ferry cruise to Oslo.

At 17:00 hrs: Departure by a ferry from the DFDS company to Copenhagen.

DAY 06: COPENHAGEN
Breakfast onboard.

Approx: 09:00: Arrival Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. This city was once a humble fishing village, but today it is the glittering capital of the Danish empire. Copenhagen is considered to be one of the world's premier capitals of design and Scandinavia's pre-eminent city. The city's 1000 year history written by ambitious kings, inspiring artist and designers, are found in the sumptuous palaces, copper roofed town houses and atmospheric cobbled squares. Sights of interest are the Christiansborg Palace (Danish parliament buildings), the Royal Theatre, the Town Hall, the Royal Palace Amalienborg, the old harbour of Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, the Gefion Fountain and the Rosenberg Castle. (No entrances included). It is also possible to visit one of the many museums the city has to offer, e.g. the National Museum of Denmark which offers an excellent primer in Viking history and shows Viking artifacts along with other art and antiquities (entrances not included). In the evening we recommend a visit at the Tivoli Gardens, also known as the Tivoli Amusement Park. Here you will find 29 restaurants, 26 rides, 400.000 flowers and 110.000 different colored lights. Tivoli is one of the highlights in Copenhagen (entrance not included).

The shops and department stores along Strøget offer everything from world-famous Danish design to trendy clothing, antiques and souvenirs. You join a guided tour with Copenhagen Sightseeing Tours, taking you through new and old Copenhagen and the beautiful harbour. The guides tell you about the main sights and the most interesting moments in Copenhagens history. The duration of the tour is 2 and a half hour (service included).
