Tansen lies on the slopes of the Srinagar Danda Hill, 1300 meters above sea level. It is the capital of Palpa district. Apart from the view of the majestic Himalayan peaks and surrounding valleys, Tansen is also popular tourist attraction owing to its peaceful environs and temples. As you listen to the Hindu and Buddhist chants rising from the ancient temples, all weariness leaves your body, and you feel rejuvenated.
The Kali Gandaki River flows through this serene hill town, and passes near the Ranighat Palace and Ramdi Ghat. Trekkers will find this route very picturesque, with views of the surrounding peaks and hidden waterfalls. The picturesque Satyawati Lake lies on the outskirts of the town. The people are devout Buddhists, and in almost all the narrow mazes of streets, you will come across a temple or shrine. Life in this hill town is peaceful, and the people are friendly and hardworking.
The Amar Narayan Temple, almost 200 years old, is a pagoda housing ornamental woodworks and fenced by a stone wall. The temple complex encloses ponds, springs and inns for travelers. The Tansen Durbar complex houses a magnificent Palace, and was built in the early 20th century. It now houses the district administration of Palpa. The Bhagwati Temple, built two centuries back, was destroyed in the 1934 earthquake that destroyed most parts in and around Kathmandu Valley. The Amarganj Ganesh temple is famous for its intricately carved interiors.
