Events in Egypt

Events in Egypt Egypt can be best described as the storehouse of innumerable fairytales. Besides, it is also known worldwide for its different religious cultures, traditions, events and festivals. These are collectively called 'muilds' in Egypt. Every festival celebrated in Egypt has its religious importance described by the Pharaohs. Being a secular country, Egyptian festivals are also secular in nature. Some of the significant festivals enjoyed in Egypt are described below:

Prophet Mohammed's Birth Anniversary
Prophet Mohammed was the founder of Islam and hence, his birth anniversary is celebrated with great pomp and vigor in the Muslim countries all over the world. Held during the month of May, several parades are observed, sweets and clothes are offered on this day.

Christmas
On 7th January every year, the Coptics of Egypt celebrate Coptic Christmas. To offer prayers to Lord Christ on His birthday, this day is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. During midnight, people observe a mass gathering and enjoy a traditional cuisine together, which is known as 'fata'. This delicious 'fata' comprises soup, rice mixed with garlic and boiled meat.

Pharaonic Wedding
Symbolizing the old civilization of Egypt, Pharaonic Wedding is generally organized during the month of November. If any couple gets married on the day of Pharaonic Wedding, then they are considered to be blessed. In the Karnak Temple, couples marry in order to be fortunate.

Abu El Haggag Moulid
this Egyptian festival is observed in honor of Abu el Haggag, a patron saint of Luxor. Some of the major highlights of the festival are music, horse racing, dancing and drum playing.

Wafaa Al Nil
One of the ancient festivals of Egypt is Wafaa Al Nil, which is devoted to River Nile. Egyptians celebrate this festival by organizing seminars, painting competitions, poetry sessions and music concerts. It is generally held during the month of September.

Abu Simbel Festival
As the name suggests, this festival of Egypt is dedicated to Abu simbel, an old temple of the country. Held on the 22nd of February each year, it is celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm.

Shem al Nessim
People of Egypt celebrate this festival to welcome the season of Spring in the country. Generally, it is celebrated during the month of April, on a Monday that comes after Coptic Easter.

The Art Festival
A popular festival of Egypt is the Art Festival, which is enjoyed almost for a week. Organized between 24th and 31st August, this festival is, in fact, the greatest art festival in the Arab countries.

Besides these festivals, Ramadan or Ramzan is the most significant religious event of the Muslims. During the month of Ramadan, devotees need to fast from dawn till sunset in order to learn the three pillars of life i.e. patience, humility and sacrifice. Apart from offering prayers, people also ask for forgiveness. They pray to refrain from sins and evils. Several Muslims visit the country of Egypt during the Ramadan period.

Eid al Fitr
Muslims end the long month of Ramadan with this religious festival.

Eid al Adhha
As the month of Ramadan ends, the Eid Al Adhha festival begins around seventy days later. This festival is devoted to the sacrifice of sheep made by Abraham. This festival is enjoyed for 4 days.
