Once a city of the Ionian League, a cultural centre during the Greek Empire and also a busy provincial capital located on the west coast of Anatolia, Ephesus is currently a large archeological site that attracts a huge number of tourists from all parts of the world. The city was known for the Temple of Artemis which once was considered as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was also the site of a huge gladiator graveyard. The archaeological site of the city is located around 3 km south of Selçuk district in Izmir Province.
