The history of Tibet is fairly new as the Himalayan mountains were formed about a million years ago and thus the history of civilization on the mountains of Tibet is not that old. The history of Tibet can be traced back to 4,000 years back and archaeological evidence indicates that the people of Tibet were nomadic tribes who settled in these parts.
According to popular legend, Lord Shenrab Miwo is believed to have laid the foundation of the traditional bon religion.
As far as geography of Tibet is concerned, the area has three clear geography divisions; the Northern Plateau, Outer Plateau and the Southeastern Plateau.
Available resources indicate that there were 18 Shangshung kings who reigned supreme in Tibet before the Chogyal rulers took over the political power in Tibet. Buddhism made in-roads into Tibet sometime in the 7th century before which Shamanism used to be the pre-dominant religion.
In the 18th century the then Chinese rulers made an effort towards controlling Tibet politically though the local people rebelled in the later years. As far as the geography of Tibet is concerned, the "rooftop of the world," is located at an average altitude of 4,000 meters above the sea level and that makes it one of the highest regions in the world.
